I was just talking with a buddy about this exact topic last night (we were surfing old 70s cartoon pages). It is a shame that Saturday mornings aren't what they used to be. It was alwas a big deal to watch all of the cool shows. We've all left something precious behind
:-(.

I miss the old days of the Saturday morning cartoons. It gave me something to wake up to on Saturdays. All reruns in the late 70's and 80's when I first saw them, and LOTL but they always seemed new.
What's all this crud they have on now?No good, boring.

I could watch LOTL all day...

I tend to have a different view. Remember how really BAD so many of those cartoons were, such as "The Brady Kids", that Gilligan's Island cartoon, "Emergency + 4" and others.

I see cartoons like the recent Warners efforts on Batman and Superman and think "these are so much better than just about any cartoon we had in the 1970s". Does anyone really think that Superfriends is better than these? Or, going back a little earlier, there are the Disney efforts such as "Duck Tales". I would have really flipped for this one had it been on in the 1970s.

This view of cartoons having improved a lot does not extend to the modern trend toward horrible stiff anime (Yugio, etc), nor to the live action fare Power-Rangers: not as good as Krofft live action.

One of the cool things about cartoons now is the inside jokes.

So I don't know if the 70s cartoons didn't have inside jokes, or if I just didn't get them.

Cartoons from the 70's were so santized and "kid friendly" gods I hate that word...almost more than I hate "Politically Correct" but I digress. The stuff from the 70's was so formulaic....one episode of say Josie and the Pussycats was more or less the same as Jabberjaw or Scooby doo. The Superfriends series were dreadful. It was amazing these clods could just about walk around much less be earth's guardians, also notice how the Superfriends were ethnically balanced....you had Samurai represting the Orient, Apache Chief the Native Americans, Zan and Jana were also Asian, El Dorado for the Hispanics, Black Vulcan....you see where I am going with this. They might not have had any lines or just token ones but they were there. Of course the Legion of Doom were even bigger idiots. I think also that series continuity was not a high prioirty back then in cartoons.

The eighties brought the mass commericialization and some great stuff compared to the 70's. Thundercats, Transformers, GI Joe, Bravestarr, He-man etc were little more than 25 minute ads but were decent.

The 90's and into the new century was the best in my opinion. The rise of shows like Animaniacs, 2 Stupid Dogs, Tiny toons and such were crammed with in jokes and bawdy humour close to that of Benny Hill. We also saw great cartoons on Nickelodeon like Rocko's Modern Life and Ren and Stimpy that pushed the edge. Let's face it. most of the cartoons were made by people who watched the drek from the 70's and wanted something better. Today's toons are made for the fans....not the kids. They won't get the jokes, but we sure will.

Peace

I think the stuff from the 80's was the best (70s was 2nd place)

After the 80s stuff started going downhill and keeps continuing to :(

I agree dude. I love the cartoons from the 80's. Especially the Transformers. I'm in the process of finding all of those by season on DVD. Another one I really loved was an anime called Voltron. G.I. Joe was cool as well. I was never that big on the Thundercats though for some reason. He-Man was OK too but the Transformers were always my fav. Another cartoon I really liked was one called "Jayce and the wheeled warriors". It was a group of freedom fighters that had these cool vehicles and the bad guys were these plant creatures that had vehicles of their own. It wasn't on very long but it still sticks in my memory for some reason. Of course, cartoons from the 70's were good too though :-)

I do like some newer cartoons though. I'm a huge Simpsons fan and laugh my arse off watching Family Guy. They definately have more adult overtones to them so they probalby wouldn't have lasted long back in the day.
Good talking with you all as always.
Cheers,

Scooby Dooby Doo was a favorite of mine. Tom and Jerry. Pink Panther
Action cartoons like Spider-Man were great as were the Superfriends. I think the voice-overs back then were what made the cartoon characters different than today's. Or maybe it was having a nice big bowl of Trix, Cocoa Puffs or Honeycomb to go along with it.

also notice how the Superfriends were ethnically balanced....Black Vulcan

Yes. You can't have balance unless you have an African-American and a Trekkie all rolled into one!
