View Full Version : Theme Song -- What's that name?

We all know the theme song begins (with that catchy banjo) "Marshall, Will and Holly...." BUT isn't Marshall the last name of the family, and Rick Marshall is the Dad? I am perplexed and wondered if Sid and Marty Kroft ever made a final decision on this issue.
Actually I think it begins Rick Marshall, Will and Holly but the Rick drowned out.
Listen to the clip of the beginining and you'll hear an extra syllable before Marshall.

I've been having this same conversation with people for years, and I still don't have an answer!
In fact, I brought it up to Kathy Coleman one time and I think we both laughed for about 10 minutes straight trying to squeeze the name "Rick" into the beginning of the song. If you say it fast enough it works OK.
My friend refuses to say Rick at all, he calls the dad Marshall Marshall because of the theme song.
The lady who wrote the theme song is on my "to find" list, so maybe we will have an answer to this after all!
George
Hi George, et all.
After I read these posts, I went straight to my tapes to hear if "Rick Marshall, Will and Holly" was there and I could not hear Rick anywhere! I listened to the first part four or five times, turning up the volume, almost putting my ear to the tv and everything else. lol
It does not say Rick Marshall, Will and Holly. Strangely enough one person once argued that the "1000 feet below" part, was "down, down, below." It is not. But I do agree that the Marshall Will and Holly part is annoying. Sometimes, characters referred to him as Marshall on the show.
Thanks Marc.
Where do people get these extra words? Deep, deep, below doesn't fit the timing of the song. *s*

who cares? it's like the theme from "all in the family". the words are 'boy, our old La Salle ran great'a La Salle was a brand of automobile.the 'rick' is in the the "land of the lost" theme.but who really gives a s---?
grow up, people.
Patrick, not only are you acting like a jerk, you are wrong about the theme song. There is no "rick" in it. As for getting a life, maybe you should take your own advice, since you don't have anything better to do than go on message boards and attack people who couldn't give a rat's ass about your insignificant opinions of them.

George, is there anyway you can block or erase that joker "patikxxx"? He's already left several negative posts on several threads, and he even spoiled our Holly appreciation board. I would really hate for Kathleen to see that. Is there anything you can do about it?

I hate to say, until I cough up the $150 bones to register the software, all I can do is remove his/her ability to post on the boards. This demo version doesn't have the ability to remove posts.
But don't worry, I'll prune out the offending messages when the time comes.
It's a shame when people who have nothing better to do have to come and step on people's toes to make themselves feel important. I pity them.

marc, after the collapse of the soviet union in 1991, presidents george bush and boris yeltsin formed a combined committee to study the mystery of the missing word 'rick' in the "land of the lost" theme.from this combined effort of international friendship,it was conclusively proven that the word 'rick' is in the LOTL theme.the rumor that the word 'rick' was not in LOTL's theme was started my the freemasons in 1975.

Patrick,
You have no basis for attacking me, you don't know the first thing about me. I have, however, noticed that you have recently become the most active poster on this site. Therefore, using your own logic, you have the most disturbing mental problems of anyone here, as you have made it your personal crusade in life to tell us how sad we are that we care so much about a television programme. So why are we so lucky to have you as our saviour when your efforts could much more effectively be used to saving the whales, the Brasilian Rainforests, or the much-loved amoeba? As I told someone else previously, anyone who really didn't care for the show would have much better things to do with his or her time than to register a username to post childish things on a board like this. You must have some major issues yourself.

i have no concern for whales, rainforests,or "much-loved" amoeba.it is apparent you are some type of tree hugging, left wing enviromentalist nut.why don't you expend your energies fighting abortion (as i do),which is the systematic murder of the innocent, instead of concerning yourself with the life of a whale or "much-loved" amoeba.(who but someone with mental delusions could possibly love an a moebe).it seems you need to get your priorities straight.

patrick,
In 1998 the united web council did a study that people who go to websites like this one and try to insult people with very dumb and juvenile behavior, probably because they really have no life and were kicked out of chat rooms for trying to pass themselves off as 6ft tall body builders with 10inch schlongs, while using the great opening remarks like "where are all the hot chicks at?", have been found to have a problem with poodle molenstation.
So how is fifi these days? huh?

Hey patrick, why don't you calm down! So we like a show from the 70's for children what is your point? Just about everybody I know who is between the ages of 27 and 35 remembers this show fondly. Do you think collective soul did a cover of the theme of the"Bugaloos" because they need to get a life? Yes, the show insults the intelligence of a 30 year old, I wasn't 30 in 1975. Most children's show don't go to the level of adult entertainment, because, well they are written for children. You know nothing of the other people on this message board and yet you need to assume that all sorts of crap about them. Yes, I like " Land of the lost" that doesn't mean I'm obsessed about it. I said"Zoinks" the other day, that doesn't mean I spend the whole day obsessing about "Scooby doo". Yes, politcal involment is important, but since you don't know any of us how can you tell if where involved or not. More importantly if you are so concerned with appearing intelligent and politically sophisticated, harrasing a "LAND OF THE LOST" website is not your path to acceptance. I know alot of people active in political action and not one of them spends his or her day spamming "Alt.hong-kong phooy" assuming it exists. People really involed in serious political work don't spend the day sending 30 F--- you people who like "Fat Albert" messages to other people on the net. You seem to need to get a life, although I suspect you know this. I won't bore you by telling you again but something is seriously wrong with you if this is the only way you can feel better about yourself, please let us enjoy our silly hobby in peace.

Hehehe, I'm sure everyone here who read my post about saving the "much-loved amoeba" knew how sarcastic I was being. You must be really dense to have thought me serious. So, I'm a tree-hugging left-wing environmentalist, eh? Gee, you sure have got me pegged. I guess that means I should quit my job as a pro-life activist for a conservative senator.
By the way, nice language you've got. Do you kiss your mother with that mouth? You probably do, I know you have a thing for mothers.
Anyway, I think you took a wrong turn somewhere. The Pat Buchanan site is http://www.gopatgo2000.com/ I'm sure you'll be welcome there.
Hey Frank,
I think you hit the nail on the head there, people who obsess with having sex with other peoples mothers are the ones who generally are having the sexual fantasies about their own mothers though I wonder why his mother would want to have sex with HIM is beyond me..LOL..
I know should ignore but couldnt resist..hahahahahaahaa....

ARK II, are you talking about that weird tank car with the 3 wheels that can spin around? And it was in a movie with George Peppard.
I saw a segment on it on the Speed channel. They were talking to some guy who designed a lot of vehicles for old shows. I think he also designed the Black Beauty from the Green Hornet and maybe also the Batmobile.
He still has that Ark vehicle, it's parked outside his studio/garage where he still designs and builds speciality vehicles. I think he lives in CA.
sorry this has nothing to do with LOTL

To patrick.
Why in the world to you feel the need to tell us over and over again how stupid we are? I've already grown up, I have a wife and a child of my own. I have a job that pays $15.00 an hour and seem to be doing ok. You don't know anybody here and if given the chance wouldn't lower yourself to doing so. If this board where deacaded to the x-files or doctor who would you be harrasing us? I think you would. We'd be getting constant"Grow up x-file fans" and "Doctor who is a piece of crap" posts. So what if someone is debating whether the theme starts with"marshal" or "rick marshall" why does this anger you so much? Who needs to "Get a life"?
patrickxxxx
09-03-1999, 02:25 PM
to whom it may concern,
the "x-files" and "dr. who"(dr who is worse than "land of the lost," if possible)are quite deplorable also.as for the theme,if it begins rick or marshall, is no real concern of mine.if people are worried about it, this is what i find moronic.(anger no, amusement yes).

You seem to not be able to defend your assurtions that you make on this board! What kind of freak are you? Do you like anything other than claiming to be a political dynamo? Do you like music of any type? Ever see a tv show you like? Ever been kissed by a girl? Do you ever do anything that privacy is actully needed for? If not then why are you so concerned about privacy rights? If you are so mature describe your life to us. How many children, who are you married to or dating? When did you begin your moral crusade? The phase"Wall of seperation between church and state" appeares in letter that thomas jefferson wrote to the danbury baptist's in 1802 explaining the meaning of the first amendment. For somebody of your political sophistication, this is a pretty stupid mistake to make. Your useing the letter of the law to defeat the sprite of the law. The only people who deny the "Wall of seperation" are people trying to merge church with state. Your a fundementalist christian, aren't you? And you make fun of us because we like" Land of the lost"? As for the details of your life, if it's so wondrous, share it with us! What are you afraid of? We can't figure out who you are and were you are from a general outline of your life so why not show us what a mature, adult life is really about? I just curious!

and while we're on the subject of the first amendment (this is for those who don't like my posts)it says..."conress shall make no law...freedom of speach)

Well, I don't need to be an attorney to realize that jefferson is explaining the meaning of the first amendment to the danbury baptists. He said the purpose is to "Erect a wall of seperation between church and state. I don't know how you can read the original documents and claim the first amendment don't do just that. The word "Bill of right " doesn't actually appear in "The bill of rights" so there's no bill of rights then huh? Grow up! Using obfusaction to win an agruement is bad form. As for your muslim beliefs, assuming your not lying, considering you arragance and self-adsorbtion

patrick,
First things first,I can pretty much bet nobody here is going to make fun of your religion why? Because we are adults and that is childish schoolyard behavior,my years on the net I have been to chat rooms and forums and sites that I particulary did not like but being a adult I said hmm had my opinion and moved on,I did not post "Oh you people grow up" or make fun of them, that is the antics of being a child the" I am on a computer so let me make fun of them and piss them off for a laugh" sure I zinged you a few because yes when people do that it pisses me off and it gives back what they give.
Yes we all know that this is a childrens show from the 70's,yes we are grown up but being grown up doesnt mean you can't come to a site and re-live some of your childhood memories of a show you loved as a child and be curious about the actors and what may have happened to them,Its no more childish then those guys who collect hot wheels (yes there are hot wheels collector sites on the net) so they can bring back some of their childhood to their adult lives.
Childish is going to sites like this and others and making fun of them, calling names and pissing people off for a laugh,NOBODY put a gun to your head and forced you to come here or to make you stay and I am sure you would be equally pissed if one of the people here went to say a Islam site you might chat on and make fun of your religion.
Bottom line live by the old adage "If you dont have anything nice to say to someone dont say anything at all".

Err. I concede defeat? No I simply won't argue with a fool who can't admit he is wrong. The constitution sets up a wall of seperation between church and you refuse to see that. You have ingnore all my questions and treated the people here like shit. You haved won anything but the ire of alot of people. Why don't you deal with the debate at hand, why would one of the framers of the constitution claim it forms a " wall of seperation between church and state" If he didn't mean it? Don't tell it doesn't literaly say that in the orginal documents, I know this so do me a service and don't patronize me. Answer the question honestly! I bet you can't!

Has anyone else noticed that this one thread on this one message board has become the largest thread of discussion on the entire site? And it has absolutely nothing to do with Land of the Lost. What originated as a discussion on the words to the theme song has degenerated into a discourse on politics and religion with a total blackguard and no end in sight. I certainly don't mean this as a criticism, as I know I am just as guilty as the next person, but we must cease to engage Patrick in conversation. As long as we continue to speak with him, he will continue to post here. George keeps blocking his User Names, but keeps getting around that by simply adding another "x" to his name. The only way to truly get rid of him, and I know that's what we all want, is to unilaterally ignore him. If we all freeze him out, he will have nobody with whom to talk, and he will soon get tired of having one sided conversations. I know how tempting it is to respond to him, but believe me, by now we've said everything that can be said to get rid of him, to no avail. So please, everyone, no matter what he says, no matter how much you want to retort, please let's just ignore Patrick so we can get back to talking about Land of the Lost, which is what we're really all about, right? :o)

What is life like for those close to you if you can get this wigged out about a kids' show from 1974? You talk about intelligence, but don't seem to demonstrate any of it. What does the goverment interfearning with citizens lives have to with whether the constution supports the seperation of church and state? You ramble far too often! Why would you think that science fiction appeals to unintelligent people, like you imply in one of your posts? Do you think moron read "The Diamond Age" And "Doomsday book"? But Anyway, I think it's probably safe to say the songwriter took some creative license, as "Marshall" has the needed to syllables that "Rick" does not. Of course, they could've written "Rick and Will and Holly...On a routine expedition...".
Now, for the inevitable back-tracking: I think the notion of ignoring patrikxxx is spot on. It's the only way to remedy the situation until a more permanent solution can be found. I won't comment on anything he said, but I will state that Doctor Who is a pretty good show and if you like the "clever cheesiness" of LOTL I could recommend a few DW stories that match it ounce for ounce. but alas, I don't expect that opinion to be agreed with on This bulletin board...
I hope this helps get things back on track. It's a pity when good threads get bushwahacked like that.

Until then, we will have to make due :)
And yes, my advice it still to ignore the unwelcome posters. Also, I like to study my logs and send fun little notes to their ISP detailing their net abuses on my system. That gets their attention real quick.

It always seemed to me one could hear Rick as the first word in the theme.
Just wishful thinking. You can't hear Rick's name in the theme. It's not there. The funny part is, had they just given Rick or Will a two syllable name, it would have fixed the minor problem.
