Hello. Did you know the USS Enterprise
visited LOTL?
In the episode, "Relics," the one with
'Scotty,' actor James Doohan...they encountered a 'Dyson's Sphere...' a closed
universe created by an unknown race!
The Enterprise even entered LOTL through
one of the main hatches of this amazing world. What do ya think? :)
Dyson was a 22nd century scientist that
discovered it.

What do ya think? Is LOTL a 'Dyson's
Sphere?' Think about it. A CLOSED
world! :)

There's a possibility I never considered be-

Dyson was a 22nd century scientist that
discovered it.

Actually, the idea of a Dyson sphere was developed in 1959 by physicist Freeman Dyson. And it seems unlikely that the Land of the Lost could be a Dyson sphere due to the fact that a Dyson sphere involves controlling the entire energy output of a star and would be immense. Much larger than our tiny, closed land of the lost was ever shown to be.

But it is a neat idea nevertheless. And a great episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

I like the original star trek MUCH BETTER than TNG (The next generation)

Classic Star Trek reminds me of the crazy uncle who eccentricities everyone accepts but no one takes seriously.

I happened to see the episode "Relics", as well as all the others. There is one thing you have forgotten Knorris. The builders of the Dysion Sphere had to leave. Nothing could live inside the Dyson Sphere because there was too much solar activity. In LOTL, everything lived.

It kind of makes me wonder why a race intelligent enough to make a Dyson Sphere would overlook a minor detail such as instability of the star they are building it around and build it anyway. For me, stellar stability would have been the first thing I would have checked out.

Is RELICS part of the original series?

"Relics was a sixth season Star Trek the Next Generation episode.

Actually, a Dyson sphere is not a closed universe. Instead, the idea is that the sphere would encompass the circumfrence of a planet's orbit around its sun. People would live on the inside of the sphere. And as Scififan mentioned, Dyson was (is?) an actual physicist. Picard mentioned him in the episode to Riker.

One could definitely argue, however, that it's a closed society. If, in fact, they never had contact with the rest of the galaxy.

Larry Niven's Ringworld postulates a variation of the Dyson sphere: a large ring that encompasses a planet's orbit.

Could a Dyson sphere ever actually be built? To answer that question, we must ask this one: Where would you get the raw materials to construct it? Keep in mind how huge the thing would be. It would probably require all the mineralogical resources of both Earth and Mars. And where would people live in the meantime? In Lunar colonies? Where would they get the money and materials to pay to build both those and the construction of the Dyson Sphere?

Likewise, getting equipment to mine mercury and Venus (automated, of course, since Humans can't just put on space suits and visit either planet) also would present similar challenges.

Barring the invention/discovery of some lightweight material that can be created artificially without plundering every last mineralogical resource, I think a space faring culture that could actually build a Dyson sphere would need to possess some sort of faster-than-light travel (or if that remain impossible, access to some form of subspace) that would let them reach and conquer other solar systems.

But it's still a cool idea.
